No matter how you want to use your studio, the Salthouse will allow plenty of natural light inside with its modern styling, and best of all, it is fully suited to year-round use.

Our Salthouse Studios are available in a range of sizes:
1.8 x 2.4m (6 x 8ft) to 4.8 x 6.0m (16 x 20ft)
Within our workshops, we house our own Joinery Works where we make the doors for our Studios.
Our doors are constructed from hemlock, which is a timber particularly suitable for doors, as apart from being durable, it is far less susceptible to movement and warping than other timbers traditionally used for doors.
Our Salthouse doors are fully glazed and double glazed using toughened safety glass, and finished with either polished brass or chrome fittings, a 5 lever mortise lock and draught excluders.
With our Salthouses, you can have a single door, double doors, an extra door set, or a solid joinery door, if you have a storage partition as part of your design.
As with the doors, we make our own windows within our Joinery Works to ensure quality.
The Salthouse comes with a fully glazed front elevation and a fully glazed panel on each side to allow for maximum light and a contemporary feel.
In the back wall of the Salthouse there will be at least one opening fanlight for ventilation (depending on the size), and all the windows are double glazed using toughened safety glass. The fanlights have either polished brass or chrome, lockable window fittings for added security, and are fitted with draught excluders.
You can add more window sets if you require them.
Our Garden Studios are available in one of two paint colour ranges: Exterior or Farrow & Ball. Both of these paint ranges offer an opaque finish with a long re-decoration cycle in a wide range of natural colours that will fit perfectly into garden environments. Please see below for information on both paint ranges.

Since our Salthouse Studios have a pent roof, and the top of the roof is not very often visible, the standard roof covering we offer is our heavy duty felt, which, while not particularly attractive, is very hard-wearing and practical.
If, however, you will have a good view of the roof of your studio and you want something more attractive than felt to look at, or you just want to do your bit for nature in your garden, you also have the option of having a living sedum matt on the roof.
Lining and Insulation
All our Studios and Offices are fully lined and insulated (walls, ceiling and floor). This allows you to use your new building all through the year, it also increases comfort and decreases noise levels, as well as finishes the building in a beautiful manner.
For the roof we have a 4 tier lining and insulation process; we insulate between the ply layer and the internal matchboard tongue and groove lining and finish the building with your choice of roofing material. For the walls, we insulate your building by trapping a breathable paper membrane between the studwork, which acts as a moisture trap before filling in with insulation.
There are then 2 options for lining your Studio: natural matchboarding, or painted matchboarding. To have it painted, you can choose our own Ivory internal paint colour, or choose between 8 Farrow & Ball paint colours.
Our standard (ex 19mm thick) and robust floorboards are set on closely spaced tanalised floor joists, but we can also offer heavy duty (ex 38mm thick) flooring if you are planning on storing particularly heavy items or if there's going to be a lot of movement inside your new Garden Building.
As well as choosing between floorboard thickness, you can also choose to have either a lacquered finish on your floor, or you can add engineered flooring.
Having a lacquered floor is an additional option that can be chosen with our Studios. The lacquer is applied to the floorboards in either Natural or Light Oak to help protect the timber, as well as giving it a nice sheen.
This option can be chosen as an alternative to a lacquered floor. There are four different natural colours to choose from, and the engineered flooring offers a chance to further personalise your new garden building, whether you’re aiming for a traditional, rustic or contemporary style.
Our engineered floorboards sit on top of the existing floorboards, with a layer of underlay in between the two, providing further insulating and sound absorbing benefits.
Our timber cladding is machined from very high quality Redwood grown in Northern Sweden, close to the Arctic Circle.
Due to the low temperature in this part of the world, these slowly grown trees produce a much more dense and stable timber than others. The timber mill we partner with, and have very close links to, is FSC® certified like ourselves.
We machine our cladding into particularly thick boards, and because it's a slowly grown timber with an exceptionally close grain, the additional benefits of our cladding are its strength and durability. We machine a capillary groove into our shiplap to reduce the risk of water ingress; and also give our shiplap rounded edges so that paints and stains grab and adhere with maximum effectiveness and coverage.
We clad your building in shiplap as standard, but we also offer weatherboard cladding for a more rustic finish.
For lighting and using any equipment in your building, you may wish to consider our electric pack to enable you to use your Studio all year-round.
Professionally fitted by qualified electricians who take all the wiring to a consumer unit ready for you to connect to your electricity supply. Internal wiring will be fitted behind the internal lining. We can also supply your building with a heater.
To add extra versatility to your Studio, we also offer the option of adding partitions. You can have an external partition, which is generally used to add a storage section, or you can have an internal partition or partitions, to allow you to add extra rooms, such as a toilet, or internal storage space that can be accessed inside, without having to go outside.
Guttering collects the water run-off from the roof and then deposits the water away from the building. This stops the bottom boards rotting prematurely, adding an even longer life to your building. Guttering is available in black or white.
We add the guttering and downpipe along the lowest side/eave of the roof. The addition of guttering also allows you to install a water butt.
All our buildings require a level, solid concrete base of the correct size.
The single most important part of installing a garden building is the base. Bases must be:
- Of the correct size
- Square i.e. have right angled corners
A concrete base supports your building in the best possible way, adding longevity, as well as creating a substantial distance between your building and surface water.
We can supply a 100mm deep reinforced concrete base ready for your building, laid by our professionals, in advance of your building being installed by us. The site must be clear and reasonably level for us to do this.
The base should always be a minimum of 50mm out of the ground to prevent surface water or puddles affecting your building i.e. rotting it.
The base you have must be made to the plans we give you when you order your building, whether we install the base, or you get a trusted builder to do it for you.
Bases for larger buildings, and in particular garages, need to be built to exact dimensions - we create special base drawings for our garages, since they sit directly on the concrete base and must be anchored into place.
Please note: If you intend to fully or partially surround the building base with hard paving we strongly suggest the installation of a French drain between the paving and base to prevent rain bouncing off the hard surface and driving up under the building, which in turn could cause damp and rot. A French drain is a simple small trench, dug around your building and filled with aggregate that will allow surface water to drain away.

Construction - ex 19mm x 125mm shiplap on ex 38 x 75mm planed framework, all using high grade FSC® Certified Scandinavian Redwood. The walls are lined with a breathable paper membrane and insulated before being internally clad with ex 19mm vertical tongue and groove matchboarding, with an option of a painted finish.
Roof - ex 19 x 125mm tongue and groove matchboarding, on solid timber rafters, fully insulated and covered with heavy duty felt that is propane torched onto the roof, with an alternative option of a green, living Sedum roof.
Doors - Salthouse doors are fully glazed and joinery made. They measure 750mm wide opening x 1900mm high for a single door or 1350mm wide opening x 1900mm high for double doors. The doors are double glazed using toughened safety glass, and are fitted with a 5 lever mortise lock and polished brass or chrome fittings. They are set in ex 75 x 75mm door frames that are fitted with draught excluders.
Windows - Fully glazed front elevation and a single glazed panel on each side. For Salthouses up to 3m in width there is a single opening fanlight on the rear of the studio. For Salthouses of 3.6m width and above there are 2 opening fanlights on the rear of the studio. The fanlights are fitted with lockable polished brass or chrome furniture, and draught excluders. All windows are double glazed using toughened safety glass and set in joinery made frames.
Floor - ex 19 x 125mm tongue and groove floorboards on ex 38 x 75mm tanalized planed floor joists set at no more than 450mm centres. The floorboards are insulated underneath. You also have a choice of either having our standard floorboards (ex 19mm thick) or the heavy duty floorboards (ex 38mm thick).
Height - We offer 2 different eave heights for Salthouse Studios: 2.0m and 2.1m. Opt for the 2.1m eave height to give more headroom inside your building, or have it at 2.0m to keep it under planning regulations height (2.5m full height).
Paint - Externally, you can choose between two paint systems: Exterior or Farrow & Ball. Both paint systems offer an opaque coverage and has a long re-decoration cycle with a wide range of natural colours to choose from. For more information, please see the Paint Ranges section on the Options tab.
