Why Choose a Crane Summerhouse?

Handmade to Order

Every timber summerhouse is made to order in our Norfolk workshop using PEFC-certified Scandinavian Redwood. We hand-select each board, removing those with knots to ensure long-term strength and durability. With over 50 years of craftsmanship behind us, we create summerhouses that are designed as an investment, not a temporary solution.

Because we manufacture in-house, layouts and access can be tailored to suit individual requirements, including wheelchair accessible designs.

Made to Measure

No two gardens are the same. That’s why every summerhouse can be made to measure. Choose the size, layout, glazing, flooring, roofing and paint finish to create a design that feels at home. Add internal lining, insulation and double glazing for comfortable year-round use or choose an unlined interior for seasonal enjoyment. Whether you’re planning a practical or peaceful retreat, your design is shaped entirely around you.

Built for Real Life

A summerhouse should earn its place in your garden. In fact, 83% of Crane customers say they use their garden building every week. Because each building is bespoke, internal layouts can be adapted with partitions to create secure storage, a separate workspace or even a pool house configuration. Your summerhouse can evolve with your lifestyle, providing a very usable and versatile space for years to come.

What Our Customers Say

FAQs

A summerhouse is a freestanding timber garden building designed to create additional living space outdoors. Traditionally used for relaxing during spring and summer months, modern insulated summerhouses can also be enjoyed year-round as garden offices, hobby rooms or versatile spaces for entertaining.

Most summer houses fall within permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. However, the height, location and intended use can affect this. We provide guidance and a planning permission calculator to help you check requirements for your property.

A well-built timber summerhouse can last 30 years or more when made from high-quality materials and properly maintained. Crane summerhouses are made from slow-grown Scandinavian Redwood chosen for its fine, dense grain and structural strength. Our protective paint system is designed for long-term durability and extended redecoration cycles.

Yes, a summerhouse can be used all year round. If you would like to use it as living space all year round we would highly recommend choosing a summerhouse with lining, insulation and double glazing. The additional insulation will help to regulate the internal temperature throughout the year and make it much more efficient to heat should you decide to include an internal heater.

A well-designed garden summerhouse can add both practical living space and visual appeal, which many buyers see as a valuable asset. Its versatility for home working, hobbies or entertaining can make a property more to future buyers.

A summerhouse requires a solid, level base for long-term stability. Suitable options include concrete or a purpose-built timber or metal frame base. We can advise on the most appropriate solution for your garden and offer an in-house base laying service if required.

Maintenance is minimal. It’s recommended that the roof is kept clean from any build up of leaves, debris, and moss especially over the winter months. The same applies to the windows, which should be cleaned regularly to prevent any decaying debris damaging the paint and woodwork. Always check for any damage to the roof or cladding which could potentially let damp in. It’s also good practice to open the windows every now and then to ensure there is sufficient ventilation inside which will also help to prevent any mould from developing.

We provide a 10-year guarantee with most of our buildings. We also have a dedicated customer service team who will help you throughout the order process, and will be on-hand to help with any questions post-installation as well. Find out more about our 10-year guarantee.

Yes. We have an optional electric pack available on all lined & insulated summerhouses. The lining and insulation will help to protect the power supply from damage caused by damp and mould, preventing a potential fire hazard.

Our electric pack extra includes 4 double sockets, 1 external double socket, 1 8-way consumer unit, spotlights, and a wall heater and/or air conditioning unit. We can also add exterior spotlights on our Holt Studio and Salthouse Studio.
