Behind the Build: How We Tackle Difficult Access Gardens

Two fitters carry a panel of a garden building down an alleyway

“I would love to have a garden room, but you’d never be able to get it in my garden”

Time and time again we hear this concern. Which means time and time again, we get to allay fears and make garden room dreams come true.

In our 50+ years of handcrafting, delivering and installing luxury garden buildings, we’ve overcome hundreds of limited access dilemmas. From one-way, no-permit London streets, to spiral staircases and slim hallwayswe’ve been able to install garden buildings successfully, in spite of some challenging access routes.

If you’re concerned about access, the most important thing is to let a sales designer know before placing your order. That way, we can test, design and craft your building so that you’re set up for success. We do this in the following ways:

  1. No-obligation site visits

The first thing your designer will ask for is a photo. Prior to purchasing a building, they can determine quite quickly whether the access route looks like one we’ve overcome before, or whether further inspection is needed.

If needed, our sales designer will happily complete a no-obligation site visit. They will take measurements of doorways and walk the route that our fitters would on installation day. They’ll then share the photos and measurements with our fitting team, to check if any design adjustments might be needed.

We really mean it when we say no-obligation. Our mission is to bring garden dreams to life - even if that only goes as far as reassuring you what’s possible.

  1. We build a test panel

We’ll ask our CAD team (computer-aided design) to draw up the smallest panel from your designWe’ll then produce a simple frame in our factory, made to the maximum height of the building. We’ll then do a test walk through the access route to make sure we can navigate any tricky corners or low ceilings.

If the panel fits, then success! Every panel in your building will fit through that route, and we’ll get it ready for crafting. If the panel doesn’t fit, we can go back to the design to make adjustments and recommendations for a building that will fit.

  1. Handmade to order

We handcraft every building to order, so we can make sure every panel, door and window is a suitable width and height to get into your garden. It’s one of the reasons we’re first-choice above commercially produced, flat-pack alternatives.

Small adjustments can make all the difference – and you might not need to sacrifice as much as you think. A triple-window panel could be crafted as three singles for individual transportation through your house, for example. Our sales designers can show you similar buildings that were adjusted for limited access routes, so you know exactly what you’ll be getting.

It’s worth noting that ex-display buildings have limited adaptability, as they have already been crafted to an exact specification. However, we can still complete a site visit and make a test-panel to ensure it will fit.

No cranes with Crane!

All of our buildings are transported into your garden panel-by-panelThat includes our Shepherds Hut! Where other companies need to hire a crane to lift their buildings into your garden, we can bring them through your house in sections and erect the building from your garden. Less hassle, less disturbance and more getting your dream garden building!
