Customer Stories: Wheelchair-Friendly Summerhouse

By Rosie Floyd - 2nd October 2019

Our latest customer story features one of our Blakeney Summerhouses that has been included in a wheelchair-friendly garden design!

Blakeney Summerhouse with Wheelchair-friendly access

Our customer from Nottingham got in touch with us over the phone as they were unable to visit our show site in person. They wanted some ideas for a garden retreat where they could relax and enjoy their garden from, while also being suitable to use a wheelchair inside.

Simon from our Nottingham show site arranged to visit the customer at home so he could measure up the space the customer had available. From this, he recommended a Blakeney Summerhouse, measuring 3.0 x 2.4m, that was delivered and assembled by our trusted installations team in July.

Blakeney Summerhouse just after installation

Our Blakeney Summerhouse has a distinctive chalet-style design with an overhanging apex roof and double doors. It has shiplap cladding that has been coated in the blue-green shade of Verdigris, which is from our range of exterior paints. It has also been fitted with an electric pack as extra so the building could be supplied with power and lighting.

The shallow ramp leading up to the customer's Blakeney Summerhouse

Once the Blakeney had been installed, the landscaper was able to incorporate it into the design of our customer’s wheelchair-friendly garden, by laying a purpose-built patio area that includes a shallow ramp up to the threshold of the building.

A close up of the patio and a view of the drainage gap

To ensure that the building’s structure and rigidity weren’t compromised, the landscaper ensured that they left a shingle-filled drainage gap between the patio and the building. The gap will help to protect the timber from any water damage as it’s designed to make sure rainwater runs away from the building. It also allows room for the expansion of the timber when it gets warm in the summer months.

The landscaper has also added a small ramp on the inside so that our customer would have easy access coming in and out of their building.

The dead, undeveloped space that our customer used to look out onto, now houses a lovely building that they will be able to use all-year-round, thanks to the full internal lining and insulation inside.
